Abstract
A recently discovered document sheds new light on the musical patronage of the Spanish royal family in the late Renaissance, and on the international music trade based in Venice. Don Juan de Austria, Philip II's half-brother, ordered the Spanish resident ambassador in Venice to procure for him a number of musical instruments and printed music books. The ambassador in turn hired Girolamo dalla Casa, maestro de' concerti at San Marco, to help him fill the order. The receipt lists the purchased items and their prices, and includes numerous woodwinds, brass instruments from Germany, and editions by both Spanish and Italian composers. The varied nature of the purchases highlights the international scope of the music trade in Venice, as well as the previously unknown musical interests of Don Juan.
